Hi Guys,
I’m Jackie I have worked in music retail for 25 years now, my journey started in Virgin Newton Abbot as a Christmas temp. They must have thought I was a good fit (or a bit mad!) and took me on part-time and before long I became a permanent fixture. During my time there we saw the shop change hands a few times from Virgin to Our Price, Sanity (Australian company) and then back to Our Price. Which sadly closed its doors to never return to Newton Abbot. (End of an era).
Around the same time Will who owned a little record shop at the other end of the town who we all knew very well, decided to expand and opened what is now Phoenix Sounds, I worked with Will happily for 20 years until he decided it was time to retire and pop his feet up (sad times), Roger and Marsha who were customers of ours popped in one day, and I asked if they wanted to buy a record shop? Little did I know that is exactly what happened. Roger & Marsha happily took over the business 2 years ago and they’ve kept the shop thriving ever since! (Good times ahead).
As for me, I’m a self-confessed vinyl addict (yes, I keep the new ones sealed, guilty as charged!). I’ve built up a solid pre-owned collection too. My music taste is all over the place—I can honestly listen to anything. (Just not Pink Floyd or Oasis). But if you ask Roger, he’ll tell you I’m the resident Ska and Reggae/Dub girl. I’ve also got a soft spot for old-school jungle, drum & bass, 90s R&B, indie pop (old and new), metal, and punk. Love the old female blues singers, occasionally I even dip into Jazz and Classical—not often though!
My Guilty pleasure, don’t tell anyone but I am a secret Swifty…(SHHHHHHHHHH!)
My Recommendation if you like a bit of Jungle is Congo Natty (formally known as Rebel Mc), and my favourite ska compilation album is Dance Craze (banging).
